Emilio Porras Vergara

Emilio Porras Vergara studied sociology at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he developed a sustained interest in the historical sociology of the state and the critique of political economy. His work examines the history of Mexican state repression and counterinsurgency, situating domestic strategies of political control within broader transnational and Cold War contexts.

His theoretical interests center on the relationship between historiography and social theory, particularly E. H. Carr’s analysis of the Soviet state as a historically constituted social formation rather than a deviation from liberal state models. He is interested in how this perspective reorients the study of states that do not fit easily within inherited political classifications.
